Seaham couldn’t capitalise on a man advantage as North Shields lost several players through injury. Shields went down to 10 men as yet another player was forced off through injury with no subs left to use. However they were able to hold on to the two-goal lead after a late onslaught from Red Star. They had taken the lead 20 minutes into the first half as their early domination paid off.
A long ball found Mark Rasmussen free on the left to run into the box. As he entered the area two Seaham defenders closed him down but were too late as the ball was curled into the far corner of the goal.
Red Star’s best chance fell to North Shields defender Steven Robinson as he attempted to header Stephen Jackson’s cross back to his goalkeeper. However he knocked past his number one and the ball went just wide of the post.
Shields doubled their lead in the 69th minute when Aaron McElwee played the ball to Femi Akinbolu. Akinbolu ran past two defenders and hit a shot towards goal. Kyle Barlow parried the ball away but only as far as McElwee who knocked the ball back across goal to Andrew Hay to poke in from close range.
North Shields were on top until being forced to go down to 10 men late in the game.
Seaham came close to snatching a consolation late on as Michael McKeown hit a low cross into the box. Despite zipping across goal, no one was able to get a touch on it to steer it goalwards.
